Recognizing Burnout

Burnout refers to a state of chronic stress. It is a grouping of symptoms that occurs when a person’s energy has a negative balance over time. It’s important for people leaders to recognize signs of burnout in the people they work with. Burnout can look different for different people, but here are some early warning signs to look out for:

Physical Symptoms

Feeling tired, frequent illness and headaches, and change in appetite or sleep habits.

Behavioural Symptoms

Withdrawing from responsibilities, isolating from others, procrastinating or skipping work, substance misuse.

Emotional

Feelings of detachment, feeling alone in the world, loss of motivation.

Psychological

Feelings of failure, self-doubt, and decreased satisfaction and accomplishment.

Spiritual Symptoms

Disconnection from faith community, feelings of abandonment from a higher power, spiritual doubt.

Providing Support
